Is Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Still Relevant in the Age of ESG?

Is CSR still relevant at a time when ESG is taking centre stage? This is a question we sometimes get. Our short answer is – yes! Your Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities are still valuable.

Here are five (5) reasons we think CSR is still important:

1. Evolve, Don’t Replace: CSR remains a good avenue through which a Caribbean company can make a tangible and positive impact on society. An ESG framework on the other hand will allow your company to express your corporate social impact activities in transparent, comparable and measurable goals and objectives. The two can be effectively integrated.

2. Get Strategic: CSR no longer has to be an add-on, “good to do” activity carried out by your marketing team. The same budgetary allocation can deliver impact activities that are better fit to the core of your business strategy. Adding an ESG lens can help you to track, measure, learn from and report on your CSR activities more effectively.

3. Demonstrate that you care: Your organisation exists in an environment pressured by social, environmental and economic challenges. Your profitability is dependent on the buying decisions of diverse communities of people. Your CSR activities remain a critical vehicle to demonstrate that you care about the things that concern your clients.

4. Social License to Operate: While ESG can offer more analytical and systemic elements to execution, a well-thought-out CSR strategy continues to offer a fantastic human touch that helps to boost trust in your organisation’s brand amongst your key stakeholders. It’s not enough to win that trust, you still need to work to maintain that trust while delivering on the expectations that come with that trust. CSR remains an effective tool in this regard.

5. Identify & Mitigate Emerging Risks: When done right, your CSR activities can serve as an early warning system for various risks, allowing you to respond faster and more proactively to events that could potentially derail your business strategy.

In conclusion, CSR is not obsolete—it is a vital component of a robust ESG strategy. For businesses in Jamaica, the Caribbean and beyond, aligning CSR with ESG goals will enhance both your social impact and your bottom line, ensuring long-term success in an increasingly sustainability-conscious world.
